The Store: The Asylum on Ann Siang Hill

The most common question I get asked is where to go when in Singapore. Well, in the nine months that I've been here, the one place I always recommend is Ann Siang Hill. Far from the chaos on Orchard Road, the area has a very laid back vibe to it, with quaint boutique hotels, cafes, and alternative shops surrounding the area. One particular store you shouldn't miss is Asylum. Once a full-fledged design store, it has turned its discerning eye to fashion, carrying pieces ranging from Mark McNairy loafers to Rick Owens sneaks to Surface to Air shirts. Yeah, not the place to go on a budget, but for oglers like me, it's a visual treat during every single visit!

I love storefronts like this. So minimal like they're hiding a secret!

One thing you should know about me is that I'm a value shopper. Yeah, I occasionally dabble in more expensive brands, but by and large, I'm a cheapskate at heart. That's why I was thrilled to see this backpack designed by Dior Homme Creative Director Kris Van Assche for Eastpak. For a fraction of the price of this handsome Dior Homme bag, I can now get a Van Assche piece that was made even better with the functionality of Eastpak. Plus, I'm getting tired lugging just totes around anyways. I think this purchase may just be what the doctor ordered. Yes, a justification.

The Item: Bape x Mark McNairy Brogues

The king of collabs is back at it, y'all! After mashing up with Doc Martens a few months back to make some sick saddle shoes, Bape has now turned to Mark McNairy to bring us these killer longwing brogues. One look and you'll see both sides are represented quite well - Bape with its penchance for camo and McNasty with his sturdy suede construction and red brick sole. It would have made for a great first McNairy pair for me, but with the steep S$719 (around P24K) price tag, I've no choice but to sit this one out. Still, can't hurt to visit it every once in a while though!

I love shoes like this that mesh street and sophistication seamlessly.

It's even tastier up close. If only the price wasn't as jacked up, Mark!

The Item: uniform experiment Watch Strap

You remember the J.Crew x Timex military watch I bought a few months back? What I loved most about it was the versatility it offered because of its changeable strap. Well, I just fulfilled its potential a tad bit with this new band I bought from Japanese brand uniform experiment. Originally intended for the brand's collaboration with Benrus, I think it looks just as dashing with my J.Crew version. The red, white, and blue stripes gives a sportier look than the olive one I had and at a sale price of only S$35, frankly, I'm quite tempted to take a close look at the other colors too.

Yes - red, white, and blue again. What can I say, my favorite color combination!

The Item: Doc Martens Brogues + Saddles

The folks at Doc Martens just don't stop, do they? I've had numerous posts about the brand ever since I got here, but I just can't help but adding more. How can I, sir, when they're putting out bad ass classics like these brogues and saddles shoes, which put together all my favorite things? Chocolate brown leather and tan canvas paired on the upper, a chunky silhouette, and tough guy soles with a red-brick finish to boot! What I love most about Docs, though, is that they won't cost you and arm and a leg for their awesome designs. Yeah, each is S$209 a pop, but compared to similar shoes which have even less 'tude than these, I'd pick Docs every single time!

The wait for the perfect saddle shoe has ended! Oh, and those brogues ain't bad too!

I haven't gone bananas for sneakers for a long time, but damn, this teaser for the Back-to-the-Future-popularized Nike Mags is insane! It's not so much the design of the shoe that has me riled up (they're a bit for the youngins), it's the entire concept of having something dreamed up in a 1980s sci-fi flick and actually making it reality! Rumor has it that Nike recently applied for patents for powered shoelaces - a trademark of the supposed 2015 McFly shoes. If they make it happen tomorrow (the day of the big reveal), then great scott, Doc, I say the future is upon us!

The Item: Cheap Woven Bracelets (Part 2)

Woven bracelets have grown even more popular since I first wrote about them. I tried getting more here in Singapore, but the ones I found were either insanely priced or suspect in quality. That's why on a recent trip to Manila, I decided to load up again at my favorite wrist accessory shop, the Bead Shop stall at Rockwell Power Plant. I was going to get more monochromatic ones like last time, but I was told of a new service they do - you could choose 3 colors of string and they'll weave it for you for no extra charge! Ever the sucker, I obliged by going for my fave red, white and blue trio and mixed it up with a green-black-yellow number for good measure. To be quite honest, it's simple (cheap) pleasures like this that make me miss Manila even more!

How did you guys spend your Friday night? Drinking, dancing, partying? Well, my friends and I did something a little offbeat - we went to go experience art! As part of Singapore's Night Voyage Festival, the city's finest museums were open till 2AM to host exhibits, installations, and even a quirky bazaar. I must say, not a bad way to end one of the most draining weeks ever. After being bombarded by numbers non-stop, my eyes finally got the visual treats they so rightfully deserve!

Ever since I migrated to Singapore, I've only been home to Manila once - a short and unplanned overnight stay after our trip to Hong Kong that left much to be desired. Despite the briefness of it all, I managed to cram a lot of things in - meals out with my family, a haircut at Bruno's, a dinner date with my girlfriend, and oh, a little bit of catching up on the retail scene in the motherland too!

Dropped by Rockwell before I left to check out Univers, Homme et Femme's massive flagship at Rockwell One. In terms of offerings, the store simply has no peers and I don't just mean locally! Case in point, these Head Porter Tanker Backpacks which were nowhere in sight in Hong Kong. Man, if you're 24 like me and want to bring a backpack to work, this is exactly what it should look like - simple but with a not-so-subtle hint of cool. It's been three weeks since my visit and I'm still thinking about them. Definitely deserves a second look when I head back home soon!

Given my current military obsession, this is definitely the one I'm eyeing!

If there's one aspect of my wardrobe that needs beefing up, it's most definitely the watch department. For the longest time, this amazing Timex Nylon Camper was the only option I had. As awesome as it was, it just couldn't hold the fort on its own anymore, especially when the outfit for the day was more earth-toned, rendering its all-black attack misplaced. So I went on a quest to find some fairly priced running buddies for it that would suffice for any and all color occasions.

Let Jay-Z have his Hublots and Rollies, I'm more than fine with these!

My first purchase was this all-gold Casio number. After resisting for so long to get one because of its massive popularity, I finally pulled the trigger and gave in to what I truly wanted since the very beginning. No calculators on the face here, folks, I'm in it for the interesting juxtaposition of all-gold decadence with a price point that pokes fun at the supposed extravagance of it all (S$30 / P1,000). Just like every classic Casio, value-for-money was the name of the game!

I got a good discount on it too! Bought it from a friend's shop here!

The second timepiece I got was something I thought was unattainable. As mentioned here, the only reason I bought the Timex Campers was because I couldn't get a Timex x J.Crew military field watch. Well, the stars aligned - I saved up enough and my cousin was arriving from the US - so I finally got it! No going wrong with this one right here - black, brown, whatever - it works. You can even change the strap up, making this already universal watch even more versatile!

The nylon strap's a bit long, so I just gave it that sweet tuck to remedy!

The Item: Sperry x Jeffrey NY Boat Shoes

About a year ago, Pharrell Williams declared that boat shoes were over. To his point, it was the exact same time when everyone and their mama started sporting 'em, shooting up demand and forcing most every brand to make their own uninspired versions. The mass acceptance actually hit me so hard that I stopped wearing my beloved off-white Sperrys altogether, so hard that it would take something quite drastic to get me back to my old boat shoe-wearing ways.

Well, after a yearlong wait, I found just the thing during our recent trip to Hong Kong. Spotted in the very same Lane Crawford where I got my Band of Outsiders Sperrys last year were these sweet collaborative boat shoes from (who else) Sperry for Jeffrey New York. It was the lone item I bought during the trip, and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. Green all over, tasty suede on the upper, barrel-tied laces making for slip-on wearing - these were absolutely perfect! If Pharrell thought that boat shoes were dead, then this, my friends, is a damn resurrection!

You know, that one reliable pairing that you can just grab and go especially in times when you wake up late and need to rush out to catch a meeting (so detailed, it may have actually happened). Well, to me, that combination's made up of khakis and my trusty Bass Weejuns. It just feels so right together, right up there with bread and butter, bacon and eggs, Michael and Scottie, oh you get the drift. So iconic it deserves its own pseudo-spotlight; it's a combination that truly stands the test of time.

Whether it be in Singapore or Manila, there seems to be a tourist uniform that men always follow. Yes, I'm talking about the raggedy shirt, baggy cargos, and flip-flop ensemble. While it may be most comfortable to go around in, one may find oneself at a disadvantage while sporting them. The world of no-shoes, no-pants, no-service still exists after all, and even beyond that, wouldn't you want to look good in all those pictures you're going to take? That's why I wanted to share my travel essentials for my trip to Hong Kong. No, I don't plan on dressing to the nines, but I don't want to go out looking like I just stepped out of my living room either. A middle-ground, I'd say.

So what's inside my diminutive suitcase? 1. Navy collared shirt (Lacoste) for those swankier malls. 2. Yellow V-neck (Gap) for those walk-in-the-sun tourist attraction days. 3. White oxford shirt (Uniqlo) for that fancy dinner date. 4. White logo shirt (Comme Des Garcons Play) for those artful, hipster-y places. 5. Striped shirts in navy and green (Uniqlo) for some harbour front strolls. 6. Tailored khaki shorts (plain + simple) to match with number 2. 7. Blue cardigan (Topman) when mall shopping gives you the chills. 8. Tortoise-shell Clubmasters (Ray-Ban) for every single day (sunlight optional). 9. Navy jeans (Muji) for everything else on this list. 10. Bag? You know it!

The Item: Pedro Bright Suede Boots

Have to admit, I've never been a fan of Pedro shoes. Sometimes they produce decent enough pairs, but more often than not, they throw out pointy, square-toed stinkers which do not have a place on this blog. But as with everything, I am first to give credit where it's due. I was going around Ion the other day when these babies caught my eye. Playful candy-colored suede mid-rise shoes, red-brick soles, and a S$73 price tag too - not bad, not bad at all. Too soon to say though if it's the start of a design resurgence, but you have my attention, Pedro. Your move.

Check it out: White button-down, navy blazer, skinny chinos, gray socks, and a black mid-rise boot. Classic with an edge. Sartorial with a hint of swagger. I could go on and on. How he could pull it off in this heat is beyond me, but god bless you, sir. It's people like you who balance out the flood of flip-flops and tank tops that seem to be so popular with tourists nowadays.

Best I've seen on the streets of Singapore thus far. Wish I wasn't in much of a rush!

The Item: Porter x Pointer Canvas Tote

I've always dreamt of owning a Head Porter bag. More than LV, more than Prada, this is the brand I told myself I'd buy when I made myself some money. Funny thing though: I thought it would take me years before I get one (always wanted those expensive 3-way tanker bags), but as it turned out, I didn't have to wait that long. I bumped into this very reasonable Porter x Pointer canvas tote at Rockstar in Orchard Cineleisure and boom, daddy's home. If you wonder why it looks so familiar, the colors were based on one of Pointer's classic shoes which I wrote about here. My first Porter and a limited edition collaboration too? Man, I must've done something right.

The Item: The Essential Muji Jeans

Ever since I started the so-called corporate life, I've been very blessed to work in offices that don't have a strict banker's dress code. In my past workplace, the guideline was smart casual, so it was rolled-up khakis, button-downs, and loafers all-day, everyday. When I moved here to Singapore, my new office was way more liberated. After a week of the same preppy ensembles as in Manila, I took a look around and decided that damn, I think I should get more jeans.

When I scoured my closet, I only had 2 pairs to show for: a faded 90s shade and an all-black incarnation - a travesty especially since I don't even have the most crucial colors in stock. So I rushed to Muji to remedy my denim depression. I copped the two basic colors I missed - the classic All-American blue jeans and the most versatile of all - a deep navy number that looks as good with sneakers as they do with leather lace-ups. I've already broken them in quite nicely and I'm proud to report that I'm smoothly adjusting to this looser dress code, or is a lack thereof?

The hype for Kanye West and Jay-Z's joint album "Watch the Throne" just got bigger. In this short documentary, we get a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the thought process and preps in making this dream LP a reality. My favorite parts? How Jay-Z gushed over Kanye's evolution from producer to game-changing artist, watching Hov rap acapella then later on hearing the verse with beats wrapped around it, and yes, that damn Russell Crowe cameo. The bar's been set real high for this one, folks. But knowing these two, they rarely leave us disappointed.

Much like everyone, I enjoy celebrating birthdays. No, not because I'm growing a year older, but because it's that time of the year where I get an excuse to shop for myself and not feel guilty about it the next day. This year though, since I already got an awesome gift from my girlfriend, I decided to tone it down a bit. Yes, I bought two items, but both were on sale. Doesn't mean I settled though. Essential shirt, check! Classic blazer, you bet! Despite not being as extravagant as I expected, I still managed to give myself a happy birthday without exactly breaking bank.

Style I Love: Curled Up Collar Suprise

Ever since I discovered oxford shirts, I've always gone for button-down collars for all my shirts. I button them religiously too, as I love the way simple mechanism keeps the collar standing firm, avoiding that god-awful 70s flat spread. That is, of course, until today. A strange thing happened with my oxford shirt's collar this morning just before I was about to button it up. I looked in the mirror and there it was: gloriously curled, all by itself. I don't know if it was the way I ironed it, but whatever it is, methinks I have to do it again. The sheer irony of something looking undone and yet more sophisticated than it should be amuses a man of simple joys like me to no end.

The Item: Sifr "Suresh" Suede Slip-ons

Another day, another new discovery here in good 'ole Singapore. While international brands are usually the name of the game up in here, I'm now very proud to share with you an Asian (read: not Japanese) brand that I can really get behind. The brand's called Sifr and if you must know nothing else about them, they make some gosh-darn beautiful shoes. Sturdy leather soles, a quilted suede upper - I thought these slippers were made in Europe! But surprise, surprise - they're not; they're made in Jakarta by skilled artisans who've been making shoes for over 3 generations now. It was an unexpected twist to the usual quality shoe script. A welcome surprise, to be honest, and hopefully the first of many local brands I'll feature here from here on out.

Sifr's artisans know what's up. I can easily imagine these on a tasteful Italian man!

The Item: The Hipper Gucci Loafer

Quick question: What do you do when you already sell one of the most iconic shoes of all time? Do you tamper with the design that made it famous? Or do you just rest on your laurels and keep on making that money? Well, sir, Gucci didn't make a name for itself by just sitting around! Home to the incomparable Gucci loafers, they updated their best-sellers by adding some bulk and much needed contrast. No longer with its timid sole, the new models sport a chunkier brown leather sole that stands out the same way those trademark horsebit details do. Definitely out of my league now, but it sure is wonderful to watch such a heralded piece get even much better.

The navy blue leather upper is a great touch too. My favorite Gucci loafers ever!

The Store: Supermama on Seah St.

What I love about Singapore is that there's no limit to the shopping surprises they have here. All you have to do is look, explore, and submit yourself to getting lost. Yup, because that's exactly how I found this lovely store called Supermama. I was just aimlessly walking around the Raffles Hotel area one night and I saw this sign pointing to an upstairs retail store. Intrigued, I went up to have my mind blown a few steps after. Tucked away in this old building along Seah St. was an-all Japanese goods store that would make every design lover's heart melt.

They had shirts, school supplies (brass pencil cases!), and even cutlery, but what stood out most to me were the bags. For one, they're the only store in Singapore to carry the Siwa bags designed by Naoto Fukasawa for paper company Onao. Imagine this: your tote, backpack, and laptop sleeve having an exterior made up of a brown paper bag, only it's tear-resistant and approximately 100 times more awesome. Clearly, these alone make the trip to the store worth it, but for a store as well-curated as this, every item whole-heartedly deserves your go-see!

This camel Siwa hold-all is my fave item from the store. Oh, those crumples!

The Item: Uniqlo Skinny Cargo Pants

You know what I haven't done in a while? Yeah, update the blog, I know. But another thing that I've refrained from doing is wear skinny pants. With my weight gain in full swing, I've found it just more practical to switch to regular straight-legged varieties (as chronicled here). But you know what, Uniqlo had a sale recently on their skinny cargo pants from S$70 to S$40 and I just had to try it on. My goodness, their skinny cargos don't only fit well, they're damn comfortable too! Made of stretch satin material but with the look and charm of chinos, I can move whichever way I want now without any discomfort. It took a big sale to do it, but I'm in love again with an old flame!

More grown up than skinny jeans, but I've missed the same slim sensation!

The Item: Fred Perry Singapore Finds

Different country, same old Fred Perry love. It's sad that I don't get to see some dear friends from the Fred Perry shops in Manila anymore, but every I step in an outlet here, I'm reminded why we came together in the first place. Awesome shirts, awesome shoes, and that's really how simple it is! I love this faded collared shirt as its a fresh departure from the classic twin-tipped shirts that Fred made famous. Sometimes you just gotta switch it up, y'know? As for the shoes, oh, it's the definition of a clean, classic sneaker. The interplay of leather and canvas is always a winner, as will these be with all your outfits given the versatile navy blue base!

I'm just a sucker for faded shirts done well. Remember this archaic post, boys?

I have so many sneakers already, but surely there's some room for these!

The Item: Cheap Woven Bracelets

My bracelet collection has been growing uncontrollably in recent months. I even shared a checkpoint post with you guys at one point to show how crowded it's turning out to be, and despite that, it's expanded even more. I think I know why too. It's 'cause I always get attracted to these cheap ass bracelets you can get from any random tiangge stall. I seem to like how they juxtaposition with the more tailored pieces I often wear, giving me that little figurative fray. Unsure of where I'll get it here in Singapore, I loaded up before I left from a stall I found in PowerPlant. From the stack below, I picked the red and navy blue numbers which have become mainstays on my wrists since then. Not bad for P40 a piece! I think I'll grab some more when I come home!

When choosing your own cheapo bracelet, I suggest you go for solid colors first

The Item: Spring Court at A Curious Teepee

Spring Court shoes are on my list of those overpriced brands I'd love to own. Truthfully, their classics aren't much different in make from your trusty Vans Authentics or Keds Champions, but being of French heritage does help jack up the price tag quite a bit. That isn't to say they didn't earn it, though. What started out as simple tennis shoe brand in 1936 has come a long way, now partnering with the likes of Comme Des Garcons and Opening Ceremony. I got to see some pieces from the latter's collection here at A Curious Teepee and was quite impressed. Great collaboration that resulted in classics with a twist - a huge favorite around these 'ere parts.

Layering in Singapore's hot humid weather is damn near impossible. I tried going to work in a blazer once and I regretted it as I started sweating in an instant. That's when I decided to take a different approach - put thin layer over thin layer to fight the unwanted moisture. My girlfriend is the best. No going around it, she's simply the sweetest, especially with surprises. Before I left, she threw me a surprise despedida with my closest friends and family. And when she came to visit for the first time last week, yeah, she pulled it off again. If you recall, I raved about these DM oxfords weeks ago. We came across the very same pair while going around and I pointed it out. Next day, when she left for Manila, guess what I came home to? Go ahead, guess! Yup, it was a super advanced birthday gift that's proof yet again of her best-ever status. Truth be told, if it weren't for FaceTime with her everyday, I'd go home to her in a heartbeat!

After a hard day's work, going home to this capped the day off well.

I had no idea at all. She got me again! I should get her back, no?

I've never been to Singapore during its sale season, but I heard a lot of good things. Well, the whole shebang just started last week and I like what I'm seeing so far. Aside from go-tos like Topman (up to 70% off) and Uniqlo (which has sales everyday anyway), I was excited to see that two major prep players are partaking in the celebration. Brooks Brothers and your oxfords, belts, and bow ties - well, hello. Tommy Hilfiger which re-committed to classics cool via this sweet campaign - nice to see you again. While cheaper, the prices are honestly not where I want them to be yet. But the sale season's ongoing till July, so patience, Bobby, patience. We'll get there.

Ah, now I can finally shop at this prepster's paradise!

The Store: The Specs Stall at Queensway

Queensway Shopping Center is the go-to place for cheap sporting goods here in Singapore. And with my Nike Frees recently giving up on me, I decided there was no better time to give the place a quick look. Little did I know though that the store that would make the most impact on me would actually be an eyewear shop. Yes, amidst all the sneakers, boards, and rackets was this little spectacle stall that had the most wonderful collection. Impressive pieces from Japan, Korea, and even classic Moscot frames from the States? Man, they know what they're doing. Honestly, it's not the bargain bin prices I was looking for (frames range from S$150 to S$250 with lenses), but what the hell, this whole getting fit thing can wait another year! (Yup, I said that last year too.)

Every time I want to read the latest issue of GQ back in Manila, I'd go to Bruno's Barbers for a haircut. Yes, some pretty weird logic there, but for a man who's not really willing to pay P500++ for monthlies, the haircut, massage, and lengthy read is a pretty sweet deal. When I moved here, though, I didn't know where to go for my free mag needs. Turns out, I didn't have to look that far. No more twisted logic here, folks; I can now read to my heart's desire at the bigger bookstores here! With other awesome titles like Monocle and The Rake lining the shelves unsealed, methinks the local barbershops just lost a regular. (Well, except for the very practical QB House!)

The kicker? I could actually afford to buy these as they're much cheaper here!

The Happening: Bored at the Bus Stop

I take the bus everyday to work and I love it. Yup, I didn't know I'd be able to say that in my lifetime, but here I am, a happy commuter five days a week. I don't even miss driving at all, as I'm able to get a lengthy nap in during my daily trips. If there's a letdown to taking the bus, though, it's that you have to wait for it to show up, sometimes for more than 10 minutes. Well, to ward off boredom, I took my trusty camera and took some outfit shots for work (well, the bottom half). I get some strange looks from older people at the stop, but hey, I could do worse things to kill time.

Yes, Vans may be back in my heart again, but dang it, it's Doc Martens that's been banging on its doors even since I moved here to Singapore. My goodness, you saw my other posts right? As utterly sweet those were, I'm still not done, not by a long shot! I have some more for you guys by way of colored canvas bucks and suede bad-ass brogues - all chunky, all the time, just as Doc does it. The canvas bucks come in some pretty wearable colors and those brogues look like they've just been pulled out from England and bashed with some 'tude. I'm tired of saying it, really, but Docs has done did it again. Only problem is deciding which one to get come next payday!

These colored bucks can replace my sneaks any day. Maybe yours?

Okay, if you were reading the blog from very early on, you know how much I adored Vans. It was one of the first things I wrote about and at that point, it really was my favorite shoe brand of all time. As time passed, though, the love admittedly waned, mostly because every punk poser and their momma started wearing it and partly because all the new offerings I saw became somewhat stale. Turns out, all I needed is to see is one awesome pair to bring all that lost love back. Check it: Saddle-shoe elements fused with the sneaker spirit of Vans, made even more special with that lovely red-brick sole! I almost shed a tear. Damn, Vans is back on the blog in a big way, baby!

I've said it once, I'll say it again: If you want to make a statement, do it by not trying too hard. A lot of people have been asking me for style tips and the one thing I always say is to keep things simple. In no clothing article is this more applicable than t-shirts. Sadly, the whole scene in Manila is dominated either by tacky statement Ts or overly designed eyesores. My humble suggestion: striped shirts, sirs. They don't make that much of a fuss, but hey, look who instantly oozes nautical coolness? I got two here in Uniqlo for S$10 each (P350) and I couldn't be happier. In this blazing hot weather, they've become my go-to for days when button-downs just can't do!

The Item: The Eastpak Two-tone Tote Bag

I don't know about you guys, but I'm totally digging Eastpak bags nowadays. I just love how they changed their game up by sticking to basic color combos and using better materials for their bags in recent years. Thankfully, they left all the kid stuff for Jansport and moved on to more grown things. You know, like this sweet two-tone tote bag I spotted at Tang's department store. No rocket science 'ere, folks; just a sturdy minimalistic bag which would give my other oft abused canvas number a break from my daily commutes. Seems like a fair deal for S$99 (P3,465). Check it: messenger strap option, roomy interior, and a secure zipped enclosure too? I'm sold!

I can see myself still using this years from now. A mark of a great buy, I'd say!

Style I Love: Slim Khakis + Penny Loafers

First of all, total transparency, sirs. From hereon out, some of the pictures you'll see on the blog will be coming from my camera phone. The dSLR's becoming heavy during the daily commute and the iPhone's camera ain't that bad to be completely honest. With the slight drop in picture quality, though, comes more sneaky street shots just like this one. On my way home, I saw this fresh chap on the MRT who nailed what has to be one of my favorite pairings of all time: folded khakis and penny loafers. He drew first blood with the slim-fit khakis and he finished it off with those classic cordovan pennies, which - if you'll look closely - has real pennies in the slots. A very charming old-school touch and wait, no socks too? It's like the dude knows me well!

The Item: The White Apple iPhone 4!

Stuck with a low-end Nokia for most of my life, I never knew what it was like to have a mobile with truly mobile features. My cellphone was always solely for calling and texting for me, so just imagine my transition when I finally got an iPhone 4 last weekend (they have the best-valued plans here!). I now tweet, go on Facebook, play games, manage my expenses, look for the best food spots, and even take sweet lomo-fied pictures with it. Mr. Jobs, I simply couldn't be happier. In many ways, I can't help but feel like a frozen caveman who was just thawed in the future. Oh, and I got it in this sweet white color too! Man, why did I take this long to get one again?

Bus rides are now shorter, connectivity much easier, and ninja shots stolen better!

When your shop's called "The Denim Store", odds are you're going to make your name on awesome jeans. Well, this little boutique did that and much, much more. It's because aside from offering brands like Nudie and Cheap Monday, they also carry shoes which are just as bad ass. One of 'em is English brand Sanders. Cobblers since 1873, the company still makes shoes like they did in the 19th century. The result? Timeless bucks, boots, and brogues which would top my list any day. Just not this one. That's because the real reason I went in - to be honest - were these Red Wing shoes. I've been looking for them for a long time and what's that, they have it in every cut, color, and material possible? Hot damn! Store's like this make me happy I live here. Something for everyone, really. That is, if everyone was cool and had phenomenal taste.

If you've been following ze blog for some time, then you know about my quest to find the perfect black leather oxford shoes. Well, methinks that after several false pronouncements, I've finally found the one! In the same day I spotted my first awesome Doc Martens find here in Singapore, I also came across these two big beautiful oxford lace-ups. What I really love about them (aside from the contrast white soles) is the leather with which their uppers were made. So soft and damn comfortable for such a brawny pair! With the quality you get, I think it's fairly priced at S$169 (P5,796). A perfect gift for someone who just settled into a foreign country, yes?

Paycheck's coming up. Oh, what awful timing for a man who wants to save!

It's official: My belief in chunky shoes has now reached an all-time high. While I'm not totally doing away with my love for plimsolls, espadrilles, and other such shoe models, I'm embracing having full-bodied footwear from now on. Admittedly, much of this is due to the epic resurgence of Doc Martens. They've been releasing a ton of awesome merchandise in recent months and this saddle shoe team-up with Bape is right atop the list. Great take with the gray and brown pair, but even better because of Doc's trademark air sole. Think that's awesome? It's only part one, folks! Stay tuned for two more delicious Doc discoveries. The Happening: Where the Magic Happens

I've never had my own place before, so I was really excited at the prospect of putting my own room together. I didn't have a lot to work with at the start; I only had the king size bed. Because of the lack of headboard, I used the dark brown curtains to create the effect. As for the pillow cases, I went for navy blue as it pairs well with the curtains and the gray sheets because of its nice combo with the navy blue (yup, all my favorite colors right there!). I finished off the room by getting matching sidetables from Ikea, a bed skirt from Tang's, and brought the pop with the red bed tray and garbage bin as well as the KAWS Dissected Companion I just bought. Overall, great first try by my standards. I'll definitely look forward to going home here every single day!

The Item: KAWS Dissected Companion

Collectible toys designed by urban artists have become quite the rage in recent years. To be totally honest, though, I never really understood all the fandom about them. They were just toys for crying out loud. But then I saw them up close and personal at Vinyl on Vinyl and everything changed. My girlfriend and I became instant fans, so much that we wanted to get sizeable ones as an accent pieces for our rooms. For the longest time, we haven't had any luck. But today, the fanboy stars aligned here in Singapore. I was able to get a KAWS OriginalFake Dissected Companion Bearbrick here at Ambush for half its original price! Quite the steal given the famed collaborator and a solid first piece to what I'm expecting to be quite the expensive hobby!

The X'd out eyes are classic KAWS. The "dissected" look is all grayed out in this version.

Can't believe I still got it! It now watches me as I sleep, standing tall in my sidetable.

The Happening: Big Move to "La La" Land

My apologies for the extended absence, guys. The past few weeks have been quite hectic. You see, just last week, I made quite the momentous move. I packed my bags, left all my loved ones in Manila, and brought my oxford shirts, penny loafers, and trusty camera - everything I have, really - to Singapore. I'll call this place home from now on and the whole landscape of the blog will change from here on out. As much as I enjoyed looking for great finds in Manila, methinks living here in a country full of malls will make for quite the posts. I rarely do travel posts on the blog, but with our local tourism department screwing things up, I guess there's no better time than now to share where I just spent my vacation. My friends and I went to Coron, Palawan a few days ago and it flat-out blew our minds. We saw beautiful corals, swam in massive lakes, explored an underwater cave, and lounged in fine white sand beaches. The pictures below don't even do the trip justice. I highly recommend it for those who are looking for something memorable to do this summer. Yeah, aside from going on the internet all day.

Summer's here, boys, and no better way to welcome it than by putting on some summer-friendly pairings that are as part of the season as a trip to the beach. For a leisurely day out, I put on some crumpled khakis, folded 'em and wore them with the most summery shoes of all - espadrilles (or at least something espadrille-y) from Toms. If you're like me, your latest experience of jeans shorts was probably seeing them on John Cena. Not a good benchmark by any means, but as you know, denim shorts have been out of the game for years. Today, though, methinks we should reassess. It's all because of this young buck I saw today sporting these awesome folded jean shorts. The kid simply nailed it with the fit and length as well as the leisurely pairing with the black loafers. The look's perfect for the coming summer season too, for those who are looking for other options aside from their go-to chino shorts!

About a month ago, as you may recall, I told you about a shoot we had with Roy Macam where I, for some reason, was a subject. Well, last Saturday, the fruits of that day hit the broadsheets. For years now, chunky suede bucks have been nothing but a dream to me. Always wanted a pair, but as limited as the menswear situation is here, I really couldn't find that perfect pair. Don't get me wrong, there have been contenders, but there's this one thing that they've all been missing, the one thing that I've always envisioned a classic buck should have: red brick soles. These Clarks bucks I came across had it and that's all it took, really. One look and wham, bam, thank you, ma'am. About P7,000 poorer, but damn sure happier. Just too bad it's not available here (got it abroad), but why don't you do us all a favor here, Clarks Philippines: Get out of the Cinderella department store, have your own damn shop, and step your damn game up! Peace.

Ever since I first heard "All of the Lights" and shared it with y'all here, I started counting the days until the official music video came out. Kanye being Kanye, I expected nothing but mind-blowing visuals to equal the already explosive track. Well, methinks Yeezy did not disappoint. From the violin rendition of the song's melody to the sudden shift to a literally dangerous light show (you gotta know it was coming) to Rihanna's headlights (sorry, but they're right there!), to Kid Cudi's brief stint, it was quite the feast. Only thing missing was Sir Elton owning it, but I'm good. Just have to rest my eyes to let that weird 3D-glasses-shoved-into-my-pupils feeling go away.

The Happening: A Different Pocket Square

I was looking through Tommy Ton's street style shots on GQ the other day and was inspired to do something new. I wanted to do what all his subjects did so well - take a menswear staple and make it my own. That's when I had this idea about doing something with pocket squares. Because the warm weather here doesn't allow us to sport blazers regularly, I thought why not use pocket squares for another pocket entirely? Why not stuff it into my back pocket to add a pop of color to my basic outfit of khakis and an oxford shirt? Well, sirs, it turned out pretty well by me, so much so that I had to take a picture, my bum all up in your grill and all. (Powersnet users had the pleasure of seeing this Tommy Ton attempt first and, yes, my ass as a forced consolation.)

The Item: Hickok Caramel Braided Belt

Ever since I got my caramel Opening Ceremony loafers last year, I've always had a difficult time finding the right belt to pair it with. I tried wearing it with my dark brown and green canvas belts, but they just didn't feel right. I guess I'm old school in that I really want my shoes and belt to be perfectly cohesive. With this realization, I finally pulled the trigger on this slim caramel braided belt from Hickok that I've had my eye on for a while. While I initially only intended it for my OCs, I found that it also goes well with my other non-black/gray shoes too. Ah, another worthy buy from Robinson's Department Store at only P475! Man, I wonder what else they have for me!

I just love the rich caramel color. By itself, it can already become an outfit's highlight

If there's one shoe I can't get enough of, it's loafers. Hell, I already have about four or five in different colors and yet when I come across other fine pairs, I simply cannot resist. It's becoming a big problem, really, and these Pointer offerings at Unschooled in Ronac Art Center are not making things any better. That's why it was with utmost joy that my girlfriend and I finally discovered Vinyl on Vinyl at the Collective. The gallery features some fresh artworks that owner Gabby dela Merced describes as being born of an artistic revolution, one that extends creativity from traditional mediums to toys and accessories. One of the works inside actually made me think about starting a collection of my own. Ah, a new addiction! This is not good, not good at all.

Yeah, it was as girly a show as can be, but I always loved its approach of recreating designer looks without spending a fortune. Now this is where these Reva Chambray Plimsolls come in. In many ways, they're a "Look for Less" alternative to the Keds x Opening Ceremony chambray shoes from 2009, but way cheaper at just a shade under P600. Great, great value if you ask me. A few days back, on shoot day, he did casual cool well with an Oxygen henley, well-fitting cargo pants, and an official Styles I Love object of desire - his Clarks waxed leather desert boots. After the long wait, our Hypebeast dreams have finally come true! Porter by Yoshida is here in the Philippines, bringing with it its iconic Tanker collection consisting of mesmerizing messengers, briefcases, and wallets. Needless to say, seeing them for the first time was such a surreal moment, like being in the presence of a legend. The Tankers' trademark nylon-satin exterior is a sight to behold and a wonder to touch. Big ups to Homme et Femme for once again bringing these bustling brands to Manila. I've always believed in the power of a simple color change. Take anything we're used to, switch the color up, and it instantly becomes interesting again. Thus was the case with this sweet Pentax K-r DSLR. You know what's a tell-tale sign that you should really buy something? When you go back for said item day after day, try it on countless times, and fall in love with it over and over again. Well, folks, that's exactly what happened with this lovely navy blue two-button blazer from Muji. As pathetic as it sounds, its proximity from my office allowed me to go visit it every single lunch break since I saw it, trying it on with various outfits and seeing that finally - after the fifth day - it was clearly meant for me. The cotton fabric allows me to crumple it up and pair it down with jeans and the navy blue color just goes beautifully with brown, black, gray, and what have you. Going against the trend then of rambling about pimp hands and spending Gs, Lupe represented a new breed of rappers, one that spoke of something as deep as religion ("Muhammad Walks") or something as lighthearted as skateboarding ("Kick/Push"). After four long years of waiting, he's back, bringing with him a catchy beat, a sick melody, and the same socially conscious and inspirational lyrics we've come to expect. All of these are highlighted in Rogue's February cover featuring my ultimate crush, Ms. Tweetie De Leon. The cover article's penned by friend Raymond Ang, and while he's as talented a writer as I know, I reckon people will have a hard time looking away from these oh so glorious snaps.

Ah, finally got to drop by the Laurel Wreath shop in Greenbelt 5 again after what seemed like an eternity! Perfect timing too it figured, since the new arrivals just dropped and were there for me to ogle at. As usual, my eyes initially shifted to the shoe offerings. In this first post of what will be a two-part Fred Perry footwear-fest, allow me to shine the light on these lovely suede desert boots. The Laurel brand put their own twist to it with the slimmer profile and more contemporary soles whose colors blend well with the delicious suede uppers. Oh, Fred, how I missed you!

When god said "let there be fine grown-up sneakers", he was referring to this very same pair. Two-tone rounded laces, gold eyelets and matte black leather upper? While I preach minimalism when it comes to clothes, I go for the exact opposite when it comes to my accessories. This applies mostly to the ones I put on my wrist, which looks more and more crowded as the days go by. I guess it all started when I was in my hip-hop phase. I remember I used to wear a lot of Nike wristbands in different colors way back when and this eventual buildup - I suppose - is my grown-up interpretation of that. I love that I got different materials in there too: leather, steel, rope, and even wood. What can I say? Them wooden beads are back.

Tommy Ton's contributions to GQ are always something to behold. In the few days he is tasked to cover street style at fashion weeks, he always manages to come up with an album that both envies and inspires. Intentionally or not, he also capsules the latest trends direct from the world's most stylish men. This time, he shows us how the work boot fever has caught on in Florence. Although by no means new (most all Hong Kong men were wearing them in August), it's a bulky look that I'm happy has sustained. However, the question is, can we get a piece of that here?

Fortunately, we can! I was walking around Greenbelt 3 earlier when I spotted these strikingly similar boots in Carbon. The local shop started carrying imported names lately and I, for one, can't help but laud their efforts. The boots are from a Hong Kong-based brand called What's Up and as you can see, they're pretty Florence, Italy ready. The mustard laces instantly pop against the chocolate brown and navy uppers and that chunk, oh that chunk will be the end of me. For about P4,600++, I actually don't mind. It's a fair price to pay to look like a dashing Pitti Uomo patron!

The Item: Striped Timex Nylon Watches

Don't know if you've noticed, but Timex changed their billboard in Guadalupe just recently. They went from pimping their super techie running watches to a showcase of their more casual pieces. The new 'board's layout was far from perfect, but hey, at least the Timex people finally got the point. Classics are the way to go, baby. And releasing similar watches to the one I considered to be my 2010 favorite is really a fine start to the new year. The stripes on the nylon straps are a splendid tweak, as they add a sportier feel without being overly trendy. Just like my favorite timepiece of the moment, they're comfy as hell and a light dent on the wallet too!

These three are but a taste, they've plenty more sweet colors to offer!

The Item: Swatch Saddle Shoes and Brogues

While I've praised SM Department Store's improving clothing offerings before, I've yet to say any kind words about the shoes they carry. Kind of weird when you think about, with the store being call "Shoe Mart" and all. Anyhow, I'm glad to report that things are looking up. Yes, shockingly, I found these awesome saddle shoes and brogues amidst all the faux leather, square-toed footwear the store's known for. They're made by a Marikina-based brand called Swatch and although the branding could've been more distinctive, the designers' hearts are in the right place.

The shape's exactly what I'm looking for nowadays - not particularly slim, a bit chunky, and with the perfect rounded toe. The saddle shoes, in particular, got me excited. Lord knows how long I've been looking for a relatively cheaper pair since the Cole Haans in Hong Kong and Swatch was gracious enough to bring me several colors to choose from. The brogues aren't bad too, but if I were to recommend, the rubber soles need some more streamlining. As you can see, though, it's really not that big a problem and for P2,500 a pair, it's another step in the right direction for SM.

Ah, saddle shoes. If I were to choose, the caramel suede and chocolate brown are tops.

These trusty brogues are fine everyday office shoes. My loafers need rest, anyways.

There is little doubt in my mind that Forever 21 was the brand that made the most impact locally in 2010. Yeah, Muji has its followers, but shortly after its launch, the long lines and crowds were gone. Forever 21, however, remains strong. I recently went with my sisters and good lord, was there a lot of people! The fashion-for-less proposition has really struck a chord with Filipinos and the brand just keeps on giving. I saw this handsome tweed blazer on display and was quite impressed with its construction. Very professorial and smart, which is always a plus by me. It's quite heavy, though, so wear it with discretion. If you're somewhere cold, go ahead. As you can see below it goes nicely with a gray vest, shirt and tie. Well played, you talented stylist, you!

On the last day of plain + simple's first bazaar, I decided on an attire that perfectly embodies the minimalism that our brand promotes. Nothing fancy, but all pieces fit well and look good together. Anyhow, I should've thought twice before wearing those leather-soled shoes while hauling heavy stuff. I think I added a lot "character" (see "damage") to them that day. Starting this blog has opened many doors for me. I've been able to attend events which I only read about before, I got to meet amazing people with the same passions, and recently, I've been asked to write for a watch brand that I admire. Well, the fruit of that recent racket was a pair of kicks I'm really excited to wear. I'm not really a big fan of Lacoste Footwear, but dang it, these so-called "Scalas" are nice! It sports a charming mid-rise cut, a collapsible brown leather upper, and best yet, Lacoste branding that is as minimalistic as it'll ever get. A great alternative to the loafers I wore for the whole of 2010 and without a screaming green crocodile in sight too!

I can imagine wearing these with my red socks and folded khakis. Just perfect!

The Item: Daycraft "Deadly Ideas" Notebook

One of my top resolutions for 2011 is to write shit down. Coincidentally, I need a quality notebook to record that and other promises to better myself this year. I considered getting Moleskines, but I just can't stomach spending that much on a notebook. That's why I turned to Fully Booked to look for a relatively inexpensive alternative. That's where Hong Kong-based Daycraft notebooks come in. Hard-bound, perfectly small size, minimalistic designs, and a bookmark - I can hang with that! I chose this "Deadly Ideas" print mainly because it fit with all I have planned this year. For P235, it's not cheap, but it won't keep me up at night. I promised to sleep earlier in 2011, after all.

The Happening: The Facehunter Experience!

I have been following Yvan Rodic's Facehunter blog for quite some time, so when I heard that he was coming over to Manila for a book signing, there was no way I was going to miss it. From the time we arrived during the short Q&A, Mr. Rodic looked to be very accommodating. We were relatively at the front of the line of the signing, but it took about an hour before we got our chance to converse. No complaints here though, because I respected the fact that Mr. Facehunter made small talk with every single one of those in line, and there were a lot of us too, mind you.

When it was finally time for my girlfriend and I to speak to him, our observations rang true. It was like we were old friends having a discussion. We conversed about his inspirations and camera preferences. I mentioned that I have a blog too. I even voiced out my frustration about the Filipino man's lack of enthusiasm for clothing to which he said, "I've noticed". That sad point aside, it was a pleasant experience from a man who's been over the world, taking pictures of style in all its interpretations. As a token of appreciation, we gave him a pink oxford shirt from plain + simple, which he said he'll "wear all over the world". That guy, such a character!

I'm with the Band: After years of Band of Outsiders oggling, I not only touched, but also took home a piece of my favorite brand's critically-acclaimed collection. Wow.

It's Play Time: My girlfriend wasn't there during my birthday, but boy did she make up for it in the best way. A Comme Des Garcons Play Shirt? All is forgiven, love!

From the Bargain Bin: In the year of fine footwear finds, these Opening Ceremony loafers are right up there . I did get them for 90% off the original price after all!

Look at the Time: My favorite timepiece of 2010 is this simple Timex Nylon Camper from Robinson's Department Store. GQ wrote about it too, months after I did. Haha!

The New Fit: I gained weight this year, so it is but natural for me to migrate from skinny jeans to something less constricting. These Zara light jeans are a fine start.

The Item: The Most Used Shirt of 2010

Ah, 2010's almost over and what better way to commemorate the year that was than by awarding, you guessed it, the Filipino man's most used shirt of 2010. While I would have preferred to award it to the white oxford shirt or even a fine pique polo, my girlfriend and I agree that the one piece we've seen most this year was the colored Henley. Take a look at those bad boys and tell us you don't agree. From Divisoria to the deep corners of Rockwell, this shirt was there, trying its darn best. While we don't necessarily endorse it, you just can't run away from the truth. That's 2010, though. How about we try something else for 2011? Okay? Okay. Thanks!

Style I Love: Awesome Wooden Watch!

My girlfriend and I were at the Facehunter book signing last night and while lining up to meet with Mr. Yvan Rodic, I spotted this gentleman's sweet timepiece that I couldn't stop staring at. This one was different, you guys. We've all had our fill of steel watches, but this one was made entirely of wood - of wood! I just had to have a picture. I was so intrigued that I googled "wooden watches" and found the site of the brand which crafts similar ones. It's a Canadian brand called Tense and aside from creating these unique timepieces, they sell them quite cheap too! At least it's a reason to visit Canadia. On second thought though, I think I'll just have it shipped.

Update: Dear reader Mr. Joel Trudel pointed me to the website of WeWOOD, the actual brand of the fine wooden timepiece I saw. While WeWOOD generally sports better design and website aesthetic, it needs to be said, however, that Tense may very well be the original (they've been making them since 1971!). Whatever brand you choose though, you can't go wrong. The world has enough steel watches, it's time to go back to nature and get you some wooden ones!

I'm really feeling the alternative wooden wristwatch aesthetic!

The Happening: Manong's Sweet Moccasins

I awoke one Saturday morning and saw some vintage-looking moc loafers on top of our dog's cage. I thought my mom was throwing out some old stuff again and was bewildered that they would dispose of this pair without asking me. Were they holding out more goodies from our baul? Agitated and yet excited, I was about to try on the old weathered pair, but then my mom asked me what the hell I was doing? Turns out, the shoes were that of our hired carpenter. I must give it to you, manong, you have fine taste in footwear. I was actually this close to robbing you too.

Man, if I saw this at a thrift shop, there'd be no hesitation!

The Beat: Linkin Park's "Waiting for the End"

I've always loved Linkin Park. From the rebellious tone of "One Step Closer" to the masa appeal of "In the End" to the hip-hop collabs with Jay-Z to the Transformers' epic ending thanks to "What I've Done", I've always felt that their music talked to me in a way that others' can't. Awesome lyrics, catchy beats, beautiful videos - what more can you ask for? It's been a while though, so it was really a treat for me to see their latest music video for "Waiting for the End". Man, the song's good, but the visual effects are nothing short of mind-blowing. Click the play button, I beg you!

The Happening: Look Who Dropped By!

It's encouraging when people you admire support a project that you've started. That's why we were thrilled when esteemed menswear designer Joey Samson and renowned style blogger Christine Dychiao (with chic daughter Berry!) of Manila Fashion Observer dropped by plain + simple's stall at Rockwell's Moonlit Bazaar last week. Joey and Tin picked up short-sleeved check shirts while Tin also got a pair of navy blue tailored shorts. We are truly humbled with all the love, though more is definitely welcome!
